چکیده

An exponential decay function was fitted with literature data to describe the decrease in corn leaf expansion rate as predawn leaf water potential decreases. The fitted functionwas then applied tomodify an existing leaf area simulation module in a soil–plant–atmosphere continuum corn simulation model (MaizSim) in order to simulate leaf area of corn plants at different water status. Data were collected from field for two years aswell as from sunlit growth chambers located at USDA-ARS facilities in Beltsville, MD with different irrigation frequencies. Comparison among simulations and measurements indicated that the modified leaf area module improved leaf area simulation for corn plant under different drought stress. For plants under more severe drought stress, the improvement in leaf area simulation was more significant. These results suggested that the modified leaf area model presented an approach to mechanistically link corn leaf area with corn plant water status, and was suitable for integration with existing corn models that simulate corn leaf area. 2009 Elsevier B.V. Alteration of Water Relations and Yield of Corn Genotypes in Response to Drought Stress

The influence of drought stress on internal water status and the final grain yield of three Egyptian corn (Zea mays L.) genotypes; GIZA2, TWC310 and TWC320 at different developmental stages was investigated. Plants grown in pots were subjected to four levels of water stress at vegetative and tassel emergence stages. Exposure of plants to drought led to noticeable decreases in leaf water potenti...

Differing sensitivity of photosynthesis to low leaf water potentials in corn and soybean.

Rates of net photosynthesis were studied in soil-grown corn (Zea mays) and soybean (Glycine max) plants having various leaf water potentials. Soybean was unaffected by desiccation until leaf water potentials were below -11 bars. Rates of photosynthesis in corn were inhibited whenever leaf water potentials dropped below -3.5 bars. The differences in photosynthetic behavior could be attributed sol...

Hydraulic architecture of sugarcane in relation to patterns of water use during plant development"^

Hydraulic conductance was measured on leaf and stem segments excised from sugarcane plants at different stages of development. Maximum transpiration rates and leaf water potential (V'L) associated with maximum transpiration were also measured in intact plants as a function of plant size. Leaf specific hydraulic conductivity (LsJ and transpiration on a unit leaf area basis (E) were maximal in pl...

Ozone Sensitivity in Sweet Corn (Zea mays L.) Plants: A Possible Relationship to Water Balance.

Stomatal characteristics affecting gas exchange were compared in two sweet corn hybrids (var. Bonanza and Monarch Advance) which differ in foliar ozone sensitivity. No significant differences were observed in stomatal frequencies, guard cell lengths, or conductances to water vapor diffusion. When plant water status was compared, leaf-water potentials for the ozone-resistant cultivar, Bonanza, we...

Leaf enlargement and metabolic rates in corn, soybean, and sunflower at various leaf water potentials.

Rates of photosynthesis, dark respiration, and leaf enlargement were studied in soil-grown corn (Zea mays), soybean (Glycine max), and sunflower (Helianthus annuus) plants at various leaf water potentials. As leaf water potentials decreased, leaf enlargement was inhibited earlier and more severely than photosynthesis or respiration. Except for low rates of enlargement, inhibition of leaf enlarg...
